TRIBUTE TO LT GEN YN SHARMA, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (RETD) OF 2 GRENADIERS

I deeply regret to inform you about the sad demise of IC–7386N Lt Gen YN Sharma, PVSM, AVSM,VSM (Retd)     on 16 Aug 2026 at Military Hospital, Secunderabad due to old age of 90 years.  He was born on 16 Mar 1936 and commissioned into the 2 GRENADIERS in 02 Jun 1955, he topped the Rangers course in the USA. He commanded the 2 GRENADIERS during the 1971 War.  He was seriously wounded, losing a leg and nearly an arm, but bashed on regardless and proofed himself to be the very embodiment of the 2 GRENADIERS first motto Nec Asperat Terrent (No Obstacles Deter).  He was awarded the VSM.  He was Instructor Staff College and Chief Instructor IMA.  Awarded the AVSM while successively commanding two Brigades in Counter-Insurgency Operations.  He was Military Secretary, commanded the Desert Corps and was awarded the PVSM. He was appointed Central Army Commander in Mar 1992 and assumed the Colonelcy on  01 Jul 1991.  He started a Vocational Training Centre, the Ecological Park-Cum-Water Sports Complex and the new Museum to instill pride in the GRENADIERS heritage.  He formulated a GRENADIERS Code for all ranks and provided new impetus to numerous Regimental activities.  He enlarged the scope of the GRENADIERS Club into the GRENADIERS Association, open to all ranks-tapped the experience and knowledge of retired officer on various issues and extended family welfare to villages.  He had pre-course training and sports training centrally organized, allotting responsibilities to various battalions. He was the first Colonel who handed over Colonelcy (10 Dec 1993) before his retirement (31 Mar 1994).  The re-formating and updating the Regiment History is a project planned and set into motion by him.   He saw it well on its way before he handed it over to his successor.  He retired from his service on 31 Mar 1994. 

Lt Gen Sanjay Mitra, AVSM, Col The GRENADIERS and the entire GRENADIER fraternity convey our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and pray to the Almighty to bestow them strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss with fortitude. We also pray to God to grant eternal peace to the departed soul.

Late Lt Gen YN Sharma PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd) is succeeded by his Son- Col Arun Aries Sharma, SM (Retd)  and Daughter – Athena Anuradha– Col Arun Aries Sharma, SM (Retd) also belonged to 2 GRENADIERS.  Address and contact details are as under:-
